Sargocentron spiniferum, commonly referred to as the large squirrelfish, is a captivating addition to mature marine aquariums. This species is renowned for its bright red body, prominent spiny dorsal fins, and large eyes adapted for nocturnal activity.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial with conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or in a large tank if multiple individuals are desired.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised carnivore pellets. Feeding should be done primarily in the evening to match their natural nocturnal feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) or larger to provide sufficient swimming space and hiding places.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is suitable, with dimmer conditions preferred during feeding times to mimic natural behaviour.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow to simulate natural reef environments without causing stress.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and caves for shelter and resting during daylight hours. This species appreciates a tank setup that offers shaded areas and crevices.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region, including coral reefs and rocky coastal areas.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
Due to their nocturnal nature and territorial tendencies, it is recommended to avoid housing with very small or overly timid fish. They are generally reef safe with caution, as they may prey on small invertebrates.
