Pygoplites diacanthus, commonly known as the Regal Angelfish from the Red Sea, is a visually striking marine fish prized for its vibrant orange, blue, and white banding. This tiny variant is ideal for hobbyists seeking a colourful addition to a mature reef or marine aquarium.
Care Level: This species requires an experienced aquarist due to its specialised dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality. It thrives best in a well-established tank with stable parameters.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in a tank with plenty of hiding spaces. Compatible with other peaceful marine fish but caution is advised when housing with aggressive species.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for sponges and tunicates in the wild. In captivity, provide a varied diet including high-quality marine angelfish preparations, frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and marine algae to ensure optimal health.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territories. Maintain stable water parameters with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025, and pH between 8.1-8.4.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting mimicking reef conditions is ideal. Moderate water flow helps replicate natural habitat and supports health.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter. Position the fish in mid to upper levels of the aquarium where it can explore and feed comfortably.
Origin: Wild-caught from the Red Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
