Pygoplites diacanthus, commonly known as the Regal Angelfish, is a visually stunning species native to the Red Sea. This medium-sized marine fish is prized for its vibrant blue, orange, and yellow banding, making it a captivating centrepiece in any marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks.
Diet: Omnivorous. Requires a varied diet including marine algae, sponges, and high-quality frozen or prepared foods formulated for angelfish.
Minimum Tank Size: 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting to support natural behaviour and maintain vibrant colours.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement mimicking natural reef environments.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Suitable for reef aquariums but caution advised with small invertebrates.
Origin: Red Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches).
This species is considered reef safe with caution due to its potential to nip at sessile invertebrates such as sponges and tunicates. Regular observation and a varied diet can help mitigate this behaviour.
