Pygoplites diacanthus, commonly known as the Regal Angelfish, is a visually stunning species native to the Red Sea. This small specimen features bold red and white vertical stripes with blue accents, making it a prized addition to mature marine aquaria.
Care Level: This species is best suited to experienced marine aquarists due to its specialised dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality. Maintaining stable, pristine conditions is essential for its health.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but territorial towards conspecifics and similar angelfish species. It is compatible with other peaceful tank mates but should be housed in a well-established aquarium with plenty of hiding spaces.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for sponges and tunicates in the wild. In captivity, provide a varied diet including high-quality marine angelfish preparations, mysis shrimp, spirulina, and marine algae to ensure optimal nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and territory.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and moderate water flow replicate natural reef conditions and support the health of this species.
Placement: Provide ample live rock for grazing and shelter. This species thrives in reef or fish-only setups with stable water parameters.
Origin: Red Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (8 inches).
