Priacanthus hamrur, commonly referred to as the Bigeye Cardinalfish, is a nocturnal species prized for its large eyes and vibrant red colouring. This small variant is well-suited for marine aquarium enthusiasts with experience in maintaining nocturnal and semi-aggressive fish.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended due to its nocturnal habits and specific dietary needs.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive, Priacanthus hamrur can be territorial, especially in smaller tanks. It is best housed with similarly sized or larger non-aggressive tank mates.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should be done in the evening or at night to align with its natural activity patterns.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is suitable, with dimmer conditions preferred during feeding times to mimic natural nocturnal activity.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow replicates natural reef environments and helps maintain water quality.
Placement: Provide plenty of hiding places such as caves and overhangs to accommodate its shy and nocturnal nature. Position rockwork to create shaded areas.
Origin: Indian Ocean and Western Pacific regions.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
Reef Safe: With Caution. May prey on small invertebrates and fish; not recommended for delicate reef tanks with small or vulnerable species.
