Platax orbicularis, commonly known as the Orbicular Batfish, is a captivating species renowned for its distinctive round, laterally compressed body and graceful swimming style. This large, tank-bred specimen is ideal for marine aquarium enthusiasts seeking a peaceful yet visually impressive addition to their collection.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Due to their size and specific care needs, Platax orbicularis require a well-established aquarium and attentive husbandry.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful and non-aggressive, Orbicular Batfish can coexist with a variety of similarly sized, non-territorial tank mates. Avoid housing with overly aggressive or fin-nipping species to prevent stress.
Diet: Omnivorous. They thrive on a varied diet including high-quality marine pellets, flakes, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Regular feeding 2-3 times daily is recommended to maintain optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: Due to their potential size (up to 45 cm), a minimum tank volume of 300 litres is advised, with ample swimming space and stable water parameters.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting replicating natural daylight is suitable. Water flow should be moderate to mimic their natural reef-edge habitats without causing excessive stress.
Placement: Provide open swimming areas with some vertical structures or rockwork for shelter and resting spots. Ensure the tank is securely covered as these fish may jump.
Origin: Tank-bred in controlled aquaculture environments, ensuring healthier specimens and reduced wild collection impact.
Maximum Size: Up to 45 cm (18 inches) in captivity.
With proper care, the Large Platax orbicularis can be a stunning centrepiece in a suitably sized marine aquarium, offering both beauty and a peaceful presence.
