The Manybar Goatfish (Parupeneus multifasciatus) is a visually captivating species prized for its distinctive multi-banded pattern and dynamic behaviour. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this large goatfish is an active forager, using its barbels to sift through the substrate in search of small invertebrates.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires a well-established aquarium with stable water parameters and ample space to roam.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but may exhibit territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar species. Compatible with other robust, non-aggressive marine fish. Exercise caution when housing with small invertebrates, as the Manybar Goatfish may prey on them.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and substrate for natural foraging behaviour.
Reef Safety: With caution. While generally reef safe, this species may disturb small invertebrates and delicate corals during substrate foraging.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Provide a well-oxygenated environment with stable water quality.
Placement: Best kept in tanks with sandy or fine gravel substrate to facilitate natural digging and foraging. Provide ample open swimming areas and some rockwork for shelter.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
