The Goldspot Goatfish (Parupeneus cyclostomus) is a visually captivating species prized for its unique yellow spot near the tail and its characteristic chin barbels used for foraging. This fish is native to the Indo-Pacific region and thrives in well-maintained marine aquariums.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, the Goldspot Goatfish coexists well with other non-aggressive species. It is best kept in a spacious tank to accommodate its active swimming behaviour and bottom foraging habits. Avoid housing with overly aggressive or territorial fish.
Diet: This species is carnivorous and benefits from a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets. Regular feeding supports its health and vibrant colours.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space. The substrate should be sandy or fine gravel to allow natural digging behaviour using its barbels. Moderate water flow and stable water parameters are essential for optimal health.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, the Goldspot Goatfish may disturb small invertebrates or delicate corals due to its foraging activity on the substrate.
Care Level: Moderate. Suitable for aquarists with some experience in marine fish husbandry.
