The Yellow Boxfish (Ostracion cubicus) is a striking marine fish recognised by its bright yellow body covered with black spots and its distinctive box-like shape. This species is a slow swimmer and can be somewhat shy, making it a fascinating addition to a mature marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. The Yellow Boxfish requires stable water conditions and careful monitoring due to its sensitivity and potential toxin release when stressed.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can release toxins if stressed, which may harm tankmates. It is best kept with non-aggressive species and in a well-established tank to minimise stress.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including high-quality marine pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and marine algae to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and maintain water quality.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, the Yellow Boxfish may nip at soft corals or invertebrates and can release toxins harmful to reef inhabitants if stressed.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable to mimic its natural environment.
Placement: Provide plenty of hiding places with live rock and open swimming areas. Avoid aggressive tankmates to reduce stress.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 38 cm (15 inches) in captivity, though smaller sizes are common in home aquaria.
