The Yellow Boxfish (Ostracion cubicus) is a captivating addition to any marine aquarium, recognised by its distinctive box-shaped body and vibrant yellow colouring, often adorned with black spots. This medium-sized fish can grow up to 45 cm in the wild, though in captivity it typically reaches a smaller size.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. The Yellow Boxfish requires stable water conditions and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can release toxins when stressed, which may harm tankmates. It is best kept with non-aggressive species.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality marine pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and algae-based foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 200 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and maintain water quality.
Reef Safe: With caution. While generally reef compatible, the Yellow Boxfish may nip at corals or invertebrates and can release toxins if stressed.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient.
Water Flow: Moderate flow is ideal to mimic natural conditions without causing stress.
Placement: Provide plenty of hiding spots with live rock and open swimming areas. Avoid aggressive tankmates to reduce stress.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 45 cm in the wild; typically smaller in captivity.
Due to their unique physiology and potential toxin release, it is essential to maintain excellent water quality and avoid sudden changes in the environment. Regular monitoring and a cautious approach to tankmate selection will help ensure a healthy and thriving Yellow Boxfish.
