Oliva spp. are a genus of marine gastropods known for their smooth, glossy shells and active behaviour. These invertebrates are a fascinating addition to marine and reef aquariums, offering natural pest control and aesthetic appeal.
Care Level: Moderate. Oliva spp. require stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium with ample live sand or substrate for burrowing.
Feeding: These snails are carnivorous scavengers, feeding primarily on small invertebrates, carrion, and detritus. Supplement their diet with meaty foods such as finely chopped seafood or specialised invertebrate pellets to ensure nutritional balance.
Compatibility: Generally peaceful and reef safe, Oliva spp. coexist well with other invertebrates and non-aggressive fish species. Avoid housing with predatory fish or aggressive invertebrates that may harm them.
Reef Safety: Yes. Oliva spp. do not harm corals or sessile invertebrates and can be safely kept in reef aquariums.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient space and stable conditions. Provide a deep sand bed or fine substrate to allow natural burrowing behaviour.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Placement: Place Oliva spp. in areas with sandy substrate and moderate water movement. Avoid strong currents that may disturb their burrowing.
Origin and Size: Various species within the Oliva genus are available; specific origin and maximum size vary. Sizes offered range from small to medium, suitable for most marine aquarium setups.
