Berghia stephanieae is a small, striking nudibranch highly valued in the marine aquarium hobby for its natural ability to control pest anemones, particularly Aiptasia species. These specialised sea slugs feed exclusively on Aiptasia, making them an excellent biological control method for reef tanks.
Feeding: Berghia stephanieae requires a steady supply of Aiptasia anemones to thrive. Without this natural food source, they will not survive long-term. It is important to ensure your tank has a sufficient population of Aiptasia before introducing these nudibranchs.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This species is considered reef safe as it does not harm corals, fish, or other invertebrates. They are peaceful and non-aggressive, making them suitable for most reef aquarium setups.
Care Level: Moderate. While they are hardy, their specialised diet requires careful monitoring. Avoid using chemical treatments for Aiptasia once Berghia stephanieae are introduced, as these can be harmful.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 20 litres is recommended to maintain stable water parameters and provide adequate space. Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Placement should be near areas where Aiptasia are present to facilitate feeding.
Additional Notes: Berghia stephanieae can reproduce in captivity, but breeding is complex and not commonly achieved in home aquaria. Regular water changes and stable water quality will support their health.
