Myripristis murdjan is a captivating medium-sized squirrelfish prized for its vibrant red hues and distinctive large eyes, adapted for its nocturnal lifestyle. Native to tropical marine environments, this species is best suited to experienced hobbyists who can provide the appropriate care and environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but shy, Myripristis murdjan is mostly nocturnal and tends to hide during daylight hours. It can be kept with other non-aggressive fish but may become territorial with conspecifics or similar species. Avoid housing with very small or delicate fish to prevent stress.
Diet: This species is carnivorous, feeding primarily on small crustaceans, plankton, and meaty marine foods. In captivity, provide a varied diet including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes formulated for carnivorous fish.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to accommodate its active swimming and hiding needs. Provide ample rockwork and caves to simulate natural crevices for shelter during daylight. Moderate water flow and stable water parameters are essential for optimal health.
Water Parameters: Maintain temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and stable nitrate and phosphate levels.
Lighting and Placement: Moderate lighting is preferred to mimic natural conditions, with shaded areas or caves to allow retreat. Position rockwork to create hiding spots and reduce stress.
Reef Safety: With caution. While generally reef safe, Myripristis murdjan may prey on small invertebrates or disturb sessile organisms, so monitor closely in reef setups.
