Myripristis murdjan, commonly known as the large squirrelfish, is a captivating addition to mature marine aquariums. Recognised for its vivid red hues and distinctive large eyes, this species is primarily nocturnal and thrives in well-established tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This fish requires stable water conditions and a suitably sized aquarium to accommodate its active swimming and hiding habits.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but may exhibit territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or in a large enough tank to reduce aggression.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should be done in the evening to mimic natural nocturnal feeding patterns.
Minimum Tank Size: 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) or larger to provide ample swimming space and hiding spots.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate to low lighting preferred to simulate natural crepuscular and nocturnal conditions.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement to replicate reef environments without causing stress.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and caves for shelter during daylight hours. Position in a quieter section of the aquarium to reduce stress.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
This species is reef safe with caution, as it may prey on small invertebrates and fish. Careful monitoring is advised when housed in reef systems.
