Lysmata grabhami, commonly known as the Cleaner Shrimp, is a popular large-sized invertebrate renowned for its vibrant red and white banded body and its symbiotic cleaning behaviour. This species is highly valued in marine aquaria for its ability to remove parasites and dead tissue from fish, promoting a healthier tank environment.
Care Level: Moderate. Lysmata grabhami requires stable water parameters and a well-established reef tank.
Feeding: Omnivorous scavenger. They readily accept meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement their diet with high-quality pellet or flake foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Compatibility: Generally peaceful and reef safe, Lysmata grabhami coexists well with most fish and invertebrates. Avoid housing with aggressive predatory species that may view them as prey.
Reef Safety: Yes. This species is safe for reef aquariums and does not harm corals or sessile invertebrates.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate space and stable water conditions. Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and cleaning stations.
Water Parameters: Maintain temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and stable water chemistry.
Placement: Place in a well-established reef tank with moderate water flow and plenty of crevices for shelter. They are often seen cleaning fish in open areas but require secure hiding spots.
Origin: Native to the tropical western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 7 cm in length.
