Labroides dimidiatus, commonly known as the Cleaner Wrasse, is a fascinating species native to the reefs of Tonga. This wrasse is celebrated for its symbiotic cleaning behaviour, where it removes parasites and dead tissue from other fish, making it a unique and beneficial addition to mature marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires a well-established aquarium with stable water parameters and a minimum tank size of 75 litres to accommodate its active swimming and cleaning behaviour.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful and beneficial to tank mates due to its cleaning role. However, it may be stressed by aggressive or overly territorial fish. Best kept with non-aggressive species.
Diet: Primarily feeds on ectoparasites and dead tissue in the wild. In captivity, it requires a specialised diet including live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and specialised parasite-based feeds. Supplementary feeding is essential to maintain health.
Reef Safety: With caution. While generally reef safe, it may occasionally nip at coral polyps or invertebrates if stressed or hungry.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable to mimic natural reef conditions.
Placement: Provide ample swimming space and hiding spots using live rock. Position in a well-established reef tank to ensure natural behaviour and reduce stress.
Origin: Tonga
Maximum Size: Up to 10 cm (4 inches)
Labroides dimidiatus is available in various sizes, allowing aquarists to select specimens appropriate for their tank maturity and size. This species is best suited for experienced hobbyists committed to providing specialised care and diet.
