Hemiscyllium ocellatum, commonly known as the Small Bamboo Shark, is a captivating species native to the shallow reefs of northern Australia. This nocturnal shark is renowned for its distinctive ‘walking’ behaviour, using its pectoral fins to move along the substrate.
In captivity, it requires a minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to accommodate its active nature and provide sufficient space for roaming. A sandy substrate with plenty of live rock and caves is essential to mimic its natural habitat and offer secure hiding spots.
Temperamentally, the Small Bamboo Shark is generally peaceful but should be housed with similarly sized or larger non-aggressive tankmates to avoid stress or injury. It is not reef safe, as it may disturb or prey upon invertebrates and small fish.
Diet should consist of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and specialised shark pellets, offered 2-3 times weekly. Maintaining excellent water quality with moderate water flow and stable parameters is crucial for its health.
Due to its specialised care requirements and sensitivity, this species is recommended for advanced marine aquarists familiar with shark husbandry.
