Hemiscyllium ocellatum, commonly referred to as the Bamboo Shark, is a unique and intriguing species native to the shallow tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region. This large variant can reach a considerable size, making it suitable only for experienced marine aquarists with ample tank space.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is required due to its size and specific habitat needs. Maintaining stable water parameters and providing a suitable environment is essential.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful and slow-moving, the Bamboo Shark is best kept with similarly sized, non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with small or highly territorial fish, as they may stress or harm the shark.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, Hemiscyllium ocellatum thrives on a diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and specialised shark pellets. Feeding should be done 2-3 times weekly to prevent overfeeding and maintain water quality.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 gallons (approximately 700 litres) is recommended to accommodate its size and swimming behaviour. Provide a sandy substrate with ample hiding spots using rocks or caves to mimic its natural environment.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is sufficient, replicating the dim conditions of its natural habitat. Water flow should be gentle to moderate, ensuring good oxygenation without causing stress.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, this species may disturb smaller invertebrates or corals when foraging.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 90 cm (approximately 35 inches).
