Hemigymnus melapterus, commonly known as the large wrasse, is a visually impressive marine fish prized for its bold patterns and active swimming behaviour. This species is best suited for experienced hobbyists with established, spacious aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended due to its size and specific environmental needs.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive, Hemigymnus melapterus can coexist with other robust fish but may display territorial behaviour, especially in confined spaces.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, this wrasse thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets. Regular feeding 1-2 times daily is ideal.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 250 litres is advised to accommodate its active swimming and territorial tendencies. Provide ample live rock for hiding and foraging opportunities.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH 8.1-8.4. Moderate water flow is preferred to mimic natural reef environments.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While not inherently reef destructive, this species may disturb smaller invertebrates or corals during foraging.
Placement: Mid to lower levels of the aquarium, where it can explore crevices and open swimming areas.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
