Hemigymnus melapterus, commonly known as the Blackeye Wrasse, is a captivating medium-sized marine fish prized for its dynamic colours and engaging behaviour. This species is a popular choice among experienced marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its active nature and striking appearance.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This wrasse requires stable water parameters and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. It can coexist with other robust tank mates but may show territorial behaviour towards smaller or more passive fish.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet consisting of high-quality frozen or live foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with marine pellets or flakes designed for carnivorous fish.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial disputes.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. No special lighting needs are required beyond what is necessary for the overall tank inhabitants.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to maintain oxygenation and waste removal.
Placement: Mid to lower levels of the aquarium. Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging opportunities.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
Additional Notes: Ensure a secure lid on the aquarium as wrasses are known jumpers. Regular water changes and stable water chemistry will promote health and longevity.
