Gymnothorax favagineus, commonly referred to as the Honeycomb Moray Eel, is a visually captivating species prized for its intricate black and white honeycomb pattern. This medium-sized moray eel is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts who have experience maintaining predatory fish.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a secure aquarium setup due to its size and behaviour.
Temperament and Compatibility: Gymnothorax favagineus is generally territorial and can be aggressive towards smaller or similarly sized tank mates. It is best housed with larger, robust fish that are not easily intimidated. Avoid keeping with small or slow-moving species. Compatibility with reef invertebrates is low, so this eel is not considered reef safe.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as fresh or frozen fish, squid, and crustaceans. Feeding should be done in the evening or when the eel is most active.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample space for swimming and hiding. The aquarium should have plenty of rockwork and secure crevices to mimic natural hiding spots. A tight-fitting lid is essential to prevent escape.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Lighting and Placement: Moderate lighting is sufficient. Place the eel in a dimmer area of the tank with ample hiding places to reduce stress.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Up to 120 cm (approximately 4 feet) in captivity, though medium specimens are smaller.
