The Gymnothorax favagineus, commonly known as the tessellated or leopard moray eel, is a visually stunning species prized for its distinctive black and white reticulated pattern. This small variant is suitable for marine aquarists with some experience in keeping predatory fish.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and secure aquarium setups to prevent escape.
Temperament and Compatibility: Gymnothorax favagineus is generally territorial and can be aggressive towards smaller fish and invertebrates. It is best housed with larger, robust tankmates that are not easily intimidated. Avoid keeping with small or slow-moving fish.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as chopped seafood, crustaceans, and specialised frozen marine preparations. Feeding should be done in the evening or at night when the eel is most active.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and hiding places.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is sufficient. Provide moderate water flow to mimic natural reef conditions without causing stress.
Placement: Provide ample rockwork with crevices and caves for shelter. Ensure all tank lids are secure as moray eels are known escape artists.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Up to 90 cm in captivity, though smaller sizes are common in aquarium specimens.
