The Sixlined Soapfish (Grammistes sexlineatus) is a visually captivating marine fish prized for its bold pattern of six vertical dark stripes on a pale body. This small grouper species is a fascinating addition to a mature marine aquarium, offering interesting behaviour and a distinctive appearance.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. It may exhibit territorial behaviour, especially towards smaller or more passive tankmates. Avoid housing with very small fish or invertebrates that may be seen as prey.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as frozen mysis shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes formulated for carnivores.
Minimum Tank Size: 150 litres (40 gallons) to provide adequate swimming space and territory.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. The Sixlined Soapfish may prey on small invertebrates and fish, so it is not fully reef safe. Suitable for fish-only or fish-plus-live rock setups.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are appropriate. Avoid strong currents that may stress the fish.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock with caves and crevices for hiding. This species appreciates shaded areas and shelter to feel secure.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Approximately 20 cm (8 inches) in length.
Regular water changes and stable water parameters are essential to maintain health. Monitor behaviour closely when introducing to a community tank to ensure compatibility.
