The Sixlined Soapfish (Grammistes sexlineatus) is a captivating marine fish prized for its bold pattern of six vertical dark stripes on a pale body. This medium-sized grouper is a fascinating addition to larger marine aquariums, offering both visual appeal and interesting behaviour.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a suitably large tank to thrive.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive, the Sixlined Soapfish can coexist with other robust fish but may prey on smaller tankmates. It is best housed with similarly sized or larger species to avoid predation.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as frozen or live crustaceans, fish fillets, and specialised marine pellets to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Avoid overly strong currents that may stress the fish.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and hiding places to mimic natural reef crevices, allowing the fish to feel secure.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
With proper care, the Sixlined Soapfish can be a rewarding and striking addition to a mature marine aquarium setup.
