The Sixlined Soapfish (Grammistes sexlineatus) is a visually captivating grouper species prized for its bold six-striped pattern and unique defensive secretion of a skin toxin when stressed. This large marine fish is best suited to experienced hobbyists due to its specific care requirements and temperament.
Care Level: Moderate to Advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Sixlined Soapfish is generally shy and secretive but can be territorial. It is best kept with similarly sized or larger peaceful fish. Avoid housing with small, timid species or aggressive tank mates. Compatibility with reef invertebrates is generally safe, but caution is advised due to its toxin secretion.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as frozen or live crustaceans, fish fillets, and specialised marine pellets. Regular feeding 2-3 times daily is recommended to maintain health.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and hiding spots.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow are ideal to mimic natural reef environments.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock and caves for shelter and to reduce stress. Position the fish in a quieter section of the aquarium to accommodate its shy nature.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
Due to the secretion of a skin toxin when stressed or handled, care should be taken during maintenance and handling to avoid contamination of the aquarium water and harm to other tank inhabitants.
