This medium-sized wrasse is a visually stunning addition to a mature marine aquarium, displaying vibrant colours and dynamic behaviour.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards smaller, more passive fish.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen preparations. Regular feeding is essential to maintain health.
Minimum Tank Size: 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons). A larger tank is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territories.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. No special lighting needs.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is preferred to mimic natural reef environments.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock with caves and crevices for hiding and hunting. This species appreciates a complex environment to reduce stress and territorial disputes.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
Reef Safe: With Caution. While generally safe with larger, robust corals and invertebrates, the Slingjaw Wrasse may prey on small crustaceans and ornamental shrimp.
Additional Notes: This species is best kept by aquarists with some experience in marine fish husbandry due to its specific dietary and environmental needs. Compatibility with other tank inhabitants should be carefully considered to avoid aggression.
