Epibulus insidiator, commonly known as the Slingjaw Wrasse, is a captivating marine fish renowned for its extraordinary jaw extension used to capture prey. This large wrasse species exhibits vibrant colours and dynamic behaviour, making it a prized addition to mature marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards smaller or similarly shaped fish.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Regular feeding is essential to maintain health.
Minimum Tank Size: 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) or larger to provide ample swimming space and territories.
Reef Safe: With Caution. While generally safe with larger, non-sessile invertebrates, it may prey on small crustaceans and ornamental shrimps.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needed.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement mimicking natural reef conditions is ideal.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and hunting. Ensure secure tank lids as wrasses are known jumpers.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (approximately 16 inches) in captivity.
Due to its size and temperament, the Slingjaw Wrasse is best suited to experienced hobbyists with adequately sized aquariums. Compatibility with other fish should be monitored closely to avoid aggression.
