Ctenochaetus hawaiiensis, commonly called the Hawaiian Bristletooth Tang, is a striking tang species native to the central Pacific Ocean. This large tang is prized for its unique bristle-like teeth, which it uses to graze on detritus and algae, making it a valuable addition to a mature marine aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful and suitable for community tanks with other non-aggressive fish. It can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar tang species, so provide ample swimming space and hiding spots.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, feeding on algae and detritus. Supplement its diet with high-quality marine algae sheets, spirulina, and specialised herbivore pellets to ensure optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to accommodate its active swimming behaviour and territorial needs. Maintain stable water parameters with regular water changes.
Reef Compatibility: Reef safe with caution. While generally safe with corals and invertebrates, monitor for any signs of nipping or stress.
Care Level: Moderate. Best suited for aquarists with some experience in maintaining tang species and stable marine environments.
Water Parameters: Maintain temperature between 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG. Moderate water flow is ideal to mimic natural reef conditions.
