Overview: The Ctenochaetus hawaiiensis, or Hawaiian Bristletooth Tang, is a small-sized tang species native to the central Pacific, particularly around Hawaii. Known for its distinctive bristle-like teeth, it is an excellent algae grazer that contributes to the health and cleanliness of reef aquariums.
Temperament and Compatibility: This species is generally peaceful and can be kept with a variety of other marine fish, including other tangs, provided the tank is sufficiently large. Territorial behaviour may occur if multiple tangs are housed together without adequate space.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, the Hawaiian Bristletooth Tang thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality dried seaweed sheets, spirulina, and specialised herbivore pellets to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial disputes. Stable water parameters and good filtration are essential for optimal health.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH between 8.1-8.4. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef conditions is ideal. Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots.
Reef Compatibility: Reef safe with caution. While generally safe with corals and invertebrates, monitor for any nipping behaviour.
