The Ctenochaetus flavicauda, or Yellowtail Bristletooth Tang, is a visually striking tang species prized for its bright yellow tail and unique bristle-like teeth used for grazing on algae. This species is a valuable addition to marine aquariums, particularly reef setups, due to its peaceful temperament and natural algae control.
Care Level: Moderate – suitable for hobbyists with some marine aquarium experience.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful and best kept singly or in a large tank with ample swimming space to reduce territorial behaviour. Compatible with most other peaceful fish species but may show mild aggression towards conspecifics or similar-shaped tangs.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, feeding on benthic algae and detritus. Supplement with high-quality marine algae-based foods, spirulina, and vegetable matter to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and grazing surfaces.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to promote healthy algae growth and oxygenation.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. This tang appreciates a well-established aquarium with stable water parameters.
Origin: Native to the central and western Pacific Ocean.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
