Chaetodon zanzibarensis, commonly known as the Zanzibar Butterflyfish, is a visually stunning species prized for its bright yellow body contrasted with bold black and white markings. This large butterflyfish is best suited to experienced hobbyists due to its specialised care needs.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and a mature aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in a community tank with other non-aggressive fish. Avoid housing with overly aggressive or fin-nipping species.
Diet: Omnivorous. Requires a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised preparations containing sponge and algae to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) to provide sufficient swimming space and territory.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. May nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates, so suitable only for established reef tanks with robust corals or fish-only setups.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are recommended to replicate natural reef conditions.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium where it can swim freely and access feeding areas.
Origin: Western Indian Ocean, including Zanzibar and surrounding reefs.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches) in length.
Providing a stable environment with regular water changes and careful monitoring of water quality will ensure the health and longevity of this beautiful butterflyfish.
