Chaetodon zanzibarensis, commonly known as the Zanzibar Butterflyfish, is a captivating addition to any marine aquarium. This medium-sized butterflyfish displays distinctive colouration and patterns that make it a standout specimen.
Care Level: This species is best suited to intermediate to advanced aquarists due to its specific dietary and environmental needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. It is compatible with other non-aggressive fish but should be housed with caution alongside very small or delicate species.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish. Supplement with algae-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and maintain water quality.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to keep the fish comfortable and healthy.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. This species appreciates a well-structured environment that replicates its natural reef habitat.
Origin: Native to the Western Indian Ocean, particularly around Zanzibar.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
Reef Safety: With Caution – may nip at coral polyps or sessile invertebrates, so caution is advised in reef tanks.
