Chelmon marginalis is a beautifully patterned butterflyfish prized for its elegant appearance and peaceful nature. This small variant is suitable for marine aquarium enthusiasts with some experience, as it requires stable water conditions and a mature tank environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, Chelmon marginalis can be kept with other non-aggressive fish species. It is best housed singly or as a mated pair to avoid territorial disputes. Caution is advised when keeping with invertebrates, as some butterflyfish may nip at coral polyps.
Diet: This species is omnivorous, feeding primarily on small invertebrates, algae, and biofilm. In captivity, offer a varied diet including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared foods designed for butterflyfish. Supplement with live rock to encourage natural grazing behaviour.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territories. The aquarium should be well-established with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. Stable water parameters and excellent filtration are essential to maintain health.
Reef Compatibility: Reef safe with caution. While generally peaceful, Chelmon marginalis may occasionally nip at coral polyps or sessile invertebrates, so monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water quality and a mature aquarium environment.
