The Vagabond Butterflyfish (Chaetodon vagabundus) is a visually captivating species prized for its bold markings and graceful swimming behaviour. This large butterflyfish reaches up to 20 cm in length and is best suited to experienced hobbyists due to its specialised care needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, the Vagabond Butterflyfish can be kept with other non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with overly territorial species or other butterflyfish to reduce stress and competition.
Diet: This species is omnivorous, requiring a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised preparations containing sponge and coral polyps. Regular feeding 2-3 times daily is recommended to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is advised to provide ample swimming space. The aquarium should be mature with abundant live rock for grazing and shelter. Stable water parameters with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025, and pH between 8.1 and 8.4 are essential.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, the Vagabond Butterflyfish may nip at coral polyps and clam mantles, so careful monitoring is necessary in reef setups.
Providing a peaceful environment with minimal stressors and a balanced diet will help ensure the health and longevity of this elegant butterflyfish in your marine aquarium.
