The Vagabond Butterflyfish (Chaetodon vagabundus) is a visually captivating species prized for its unique black and white patterning and elegant swimming behaviour. This small butterflyfish reaches a maximum size of approximately 20 cm (8 inches) and is best suited to larger, mature marine aquariums.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, the Vagabond Butterflyfish can be kept with other non-aggressive tank mates. However, it may become territorial towards conspecifics or similar species, so caution is advised when housing multiple butterflyfish together.
Diet: This species is omnivorous, feeding on a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish. Supplementing with algae-based foods is beneficial to mimic natural feeding habits.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres (40 US gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and maintain water quality. The aquarium should include plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Stable water parameters and excellent filtration are essential for long-term health.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, this species may nip at coral polyps or sessile invertebrates, so it is best kept in a fish-only or well-established mixed reef system where potential coral damage can be minimised.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water conditions and a varied diet to thrive.
