Chaetodon unimaculatus, commonly known as the Ovalspot Butterflyfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its unique single black spot on the body and elegant form. This small butterflyfish is best suited to experienced marine aquarists due to its specialised dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended. This species requires stable water parameters and a mature aquarium environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but territorial towards conspecifics and similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks. Compatible with other non-aggressive fish but caution is advised with very small or slow-moving species.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish. Supplement with algae-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres (40 US gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territories.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. May nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates; suitable for reef tanks with robust corals and ample hiding places.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow are ideal to replicate natural habitat conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter. Position in a well-established aquarium to reduce stress and promote natural behaviour.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
