The Chaetodon ulietensis, commonly known as the Medium Butterflyfish, is a visually stunning species prized for its bright yellow body contrasted with black and white markings. This species is best suited for experienced marine aquarists due to its specialised care requirements.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar-shaped fish. It is compatible with other semi-aggressive to peaceful species but should be housed with caution alongside delicate or slow-moving fish.
Diet: Omnivorous, requiring a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish. Regular feeding of high-quality frozen and live foods is recommended to maintain health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is advised to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour. The aquarium should be well-established with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While not known to be highly destructive to corals, some butterflyfish species may nip at coral polyps or sessile invertebrates. Monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025, and moderate water flow. Good water quality and regular maintenance are essential.
