Dascyllus aruanus, also known as the Whitetail Dascyllus, is a popular damselfish species prized for its striking black and white pattern and active behaviour. This species is suitable for a range of marine aquarium setups, from beginner to advanced hobbyists.
Care Level: Easy to moderate. Dascyllus aruanus is hardy but benefits from stable water conditions and a well-maintained tank.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. While generally peaceful, they can be territorial, especially in smaller tanks or when kept singly.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood.
Minimum Tank Size: 75 litres (20 gallons) recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and reduce territorial aggression.
Reef Safe: With Caution. They may nip at small invertebrates or corals, so caution is advised when keeping them in reef tanks.
Lighting Requirements: Not specific; standard aquarium lighting is sufficient.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow preferred to mimic natural reef environments.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and territory establishment. They thrive in tanks with ample shelter and open swimming areas.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 10 cm (4 inches).
Dascyllus aruanus is a lively addition to community marine tanks, especially when kept in small groups to reduce aggression. Regular water changes and stable water parameters will ensure their health and longevity.
