Chaetodon striatus, commonly known as the Banded Butterflyfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its bold black and white vertical stripes. This small butterflyfish reaches a maximum size of approximately 15 cm (6 inches) and is best suited to marine aquariums with a minimum tank size of 150 litres (40 US gallons).
Temperament and Compatibility: The Banded Butterflyfish is generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. It is compatible with other peaceful fish but should not be housed with aggressive or fin-nipping species. Due to its specialised diet and sensitivity, it is recommended for intermediate to advanced aquarists.
Diet: In the aquarium, Chaetodon striatus requires a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish. Supplementing with marine algae or coral polyps may be necessary to mimic natural feeding habits.
Tank Requirements: Provide a well-established tank with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. Stable water parameters and excellent water quality are essential. Lighting and water flow should be moderate, replicating natural reef conditions. Placement should allow ample swimming space and avoid overcrowding.
Reef Safety: With caution. While generally reef safe, this species may nip at coral polyps or sessile invertebrates, so careful monitoring is advised.
Origin: Western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea.
