Chaetodon sedentarius, commonly referred to as the Reef Butterflyfish, is a captivating species native to the western Atlantic Ocean. This medium-sized butterflyfish is prized for its unique colouration and pattern, making it a standout addition to mature marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks.
Diet: Omnivorous. Requires a varied diet including marine algae, high-quality frozen or live foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 150 litres (40 gallons) to provide sufficient swimming space and territory.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting to support natural behaviour and any live rock or coral growth.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow to mimic natural reef conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Avoid aggressive tankmates and ensure peaceful community species.
Origin: Western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.
Maximum Size: Approximately 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
This species is reef safe with caution, as it may nip at coral polyps or sessile invertebrates. Careful observation is recommended when introducing to reef tanks.
