Chaetodon sedentarius, commonly known as the West Atlantic Butterflyfish, is a captivating species prized for its unique colouration and pattern. This large butterflyfish reaches up to 20 cm in length and is native to the western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico.
In the aquarium, it is best suited to experienced hobbyists due to its specialised dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality. It thrives in a mature marine tank of at least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) with ample live rock to provide natural grazing opportunities and hiding places.
This species is generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar-shaped fish. It is compatible with a variety of other peaceful marine species but should not be housed with aggressive or fin-nipping fish.
Diet: Omnivorous, requiring a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish. Supplementing with algae or sponge-based foods is beneficial.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Due to its specialised care requirements, the West Atlantic Butterflyfish is recommended for aquarists with intermediate to advanced experience in marine fish husbandry.
