Atelomycterus marmoratus, commonly known as the Small Spotted Bamboo Shark, is a fascinating species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts for its unique appearance and calm temperament. This nocturnal shark features a distinctive marbled pattern that provides excellent camouflage among sandy and rocky substrates.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful and shy, suitable for community tanks with non-aggressive tankmates.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and specialised shark pellets. Feeding should be done in the evening to align with their nocturnal habits.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide adequate swimming space and substrate for resting.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate to low lighting to mimic natural conditions and reduce stress.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is preferred to ensure good oxygenation without causing excessive current.
Placement: Provide a sandy or fine gravel substrate with plenty of hiding spots such as caves and rockwork to replicate their natural habitat.
Origin: Native to the Indo-West Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 60 cm in length.
Due to their nocturnal and shy nature, it is important to avoid housing them with aggressive or overly active species. Regular water changes and monitoring of water quality are essential to maintain health. This species is not reef safe as it may disturb invertebrates and small fish.
