Chaetodon argentatus, commonly known as the Silver Butterflyfish, is a visually stunning species prized for its elegant silver body adorned with black markings. This large butterflyfish is best suited to experienced marine aquarium keepers due to its specific care needs and temperament.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in a suitably large aquarium.
Diet: Omnivorous. In the aquarium, provide a varied diet including high-quality frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, marine algae, and specialised prepared foods formulated for butterflyfish. Regular feeding of meaty and plant-based foods helps maintain health and colour.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. No special lighting needs.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef environments is ideal.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock with crevices for shelter and grazing. Avoid aggressive tank mates and ensure peaceful community species.
Origin: Native to the Western Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches) in length.
Reef Safety: With Caution. May nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates; not recommended for delicate reef tanks.
