Calloplesiops altivelis, commonly referred to as the Large Marine Basslet, is a fascinating and visually striking species prized by marine aquarium hobbyists. This fish is notable for its intricate patterning and secretive behaviour, often seeking shelter among rockwork and crevices.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires a stable, mature aquarium environment with plenty of hiding places to feel secure.
Temperament: Generally shy and peaceful but may become territorial towards similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in a suitably sized tank.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feeds on meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Regular feeding with high-quality frozen or live foods is recommended to maintain health.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide adequate space and hiding spots.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is preferred, mimicking their natural shaded reef habitats.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement to replicate natural reef conditions without causing stress.
Placement: Provide ample rockwork with caves and crevices for shelter. This species is nocturnal and appreciates dimly lit areas to retreat during the day.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, inhabiting coral reefs and lagoons.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches) in length.
This species is considered reef safe with caution, as it may prey on small invertebrates or fish if housed in a reef environment. Careful selection of tank mates is advised to avoid predation.
