Calloplesiops argus is a captivating small basslet prized for its distinctive false eye-spot and cryptic behaviour. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this species is a nocturnal predator that thrives in well-established marine aquariums with plenty of hiding places.
In captivity, Calloplesiops argus requires a minimum tank size of 120 litres to accommodate its secretive nature and swimming needs. It prefers a mature tank with ample live rock formations to provide shelter and hunting grounds. This species is generally peaceful but may show territorial behaviour towards similar-sized or shaped fish.
Diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, offered regularly to maintain optimal health. Feeding at dusk or night aligns with its natural activity patterns.
Compatibility is generally good with other peaceful fish, but caution is advised when housing with very small fish or invertebrates, as Calloplesiops argus may view them as prey.
Water parameters should be stable with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and moderate water flow to mimic natural reef conditions.
