Calloplesiops argus, often referred to as the Devil’s Coach Horse, is a fascinating marine basslet known for its distinctive eye-like spot and secretive behaviour. This medium-sized specimen is a captivating addition to mature reef or fish-only aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a peaceful environment.
Temperament: Generally shy and reclusive, Calloplesiops argus is peaceful but may hide frequently. It is best kept with non-aggressive tank mates.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Regular feeding is essential to maintain health.
Minimum Tank Size: 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide ample space and hiding places.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, it may prey on very small invertebrates or fish fry.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow are recommended to mimic natural reef crevices.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock with caves and crevices for shelter. This species appreciates dimmer areas within the aquarium.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches).
