Bodianus rufus, commonly known as the Spanish Hogfish, is a striking wrasse species prized for its vibrant red and orange hues and active behaviour. This extra large specimen is suitable for experienced marine aquarium hobbyists who can provide ample space and proper care.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Spanish Hogfish is semi-aggressive and can be territorial, especially towards smaller or more passive fish. It is best housed with similarly sized or robust tank mates. Avoid keeping with very small or timid species to prevent stress or aggression.
Diet: This species is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen preparations. Regular feeding of protein-rich foods supports their health and vibrant colours.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to accommodate the active swimming behaviour and territorial nature of the Spanish Hogfish. Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging opportunities.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and good water quality with regular water changes. Moderate water flow and lighting are suitable, replicating natural reef environments.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While not typically harmful to corals, the Spanish Hogfish may prey on small invertebrates such as shrimps and crabs, so it is not fully reef safe.
Overall, the Bodianus rufus is a captivating addition to a well-established marine aquarium, offering vibrant colour and engaging behaviour for dedicated aquarists.
