Bodianus rufus, commonly referred to as the Red Pigfish, is a large and colourful wrasse species prized for its vivid red hues and dynamic presence in marine aquariums. Native to the western Atlantic Ocean, this species is best suited to experienced hobbyists due to its size and temperament.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended. Bodianus rufus requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: This wrasse can be semi-aggressive, particularly towards smaller or more passive tankmates. It is advisable to keep it with similarly sized or robust species. Avoid housing with very small or timid fish to prevent stress or aggression.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, Bodianus rufus thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes formulated for carnivores.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territories. The aquarium should include plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While not inherently destructive to corals, their semi-aggressive nature and tendency to rearrange substrate may stress sensitive reef inhabitants.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable to mimic their natural environment.
Origin: Western Atlantic Ocean.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
