Acanthurus tennentii, commonly known as Tennent’s Surgeonfish, is a visually captivating tang prized for its bold colouration and intricate markings. This large variant is suitable for advanced marine aquarium enthusiasts who can provide the space and care it demands.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive, Tennent’s Surgeonfish can be territorial, especially towards conspecifics or similar tang species. It is best housed singly or in a large, well-structured aquarium to minimise stress and aggression. Compatible with a variety of other robust marine fish, but caution is advised when mixing with smaller, more passive species.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, this species thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality dried seaweed, spirulina, and occasional meaty foods such as mysis or brine shrimp to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Due to its size and active swimming behaviour, a minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended, though larger is preferred. Provide ample live rock for grazing and hiding places to replicate its natural reef environment.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow to simulate natural reef currents.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, it may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or corals, especially if underfed or stressed.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Up to 35 cm (14 inches).
