The Acanthurus auranticavus, commonly known as the Orange-Spine Surgeonfish, is a visually captivating tang species prized for its vivid colouration and distinctive orange spines on the caudal peduncle. This large marine fish is a popular choice among advanced hobbyists who maintain spacious reef or fish-only aquariums.
Temperament and Compatibility: This species is generally semi-aggressive and territorial, especially towards conspecifics and other tangs. It is best housed singly or in a large tank with ample swimming space to reduce territorial disputes. Compatible tank mates include other robust, non-aggressive fish species.
Diet: The Orange-Spine Surgeonfish is primarily herbivorous. A diet rich in marine algae, seaweed sheets (nori), and specialised herbivore pellets or flakes is essential to maintain optimal health and vibrant colouration. Supplementing with occasional meaty foods is acceptable but should not dominate the diet.
Tank Requirements: Due to its size and active nature, a minimum tank size of 180 litres is recommended, though larger volumes are preferable to accommodate its swimming needs and territorial behaviour. Stable water parameters, good filtration, and moderate water flow are essential.
Reef Compatibility: This species is considered reef safe with caution. While generally safe with corals, it may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or soft corals, so monitoring is advised.
Origin and Size: Native to the Western Atlantic, the Orange-Spine Surgeonfish can reach a maximum size of approximately 30 cm in captivity.
